Why not read a book on the challenges to the church in the 21st Century - GC

This is a book to read now because by 2020 it will be too late (according to Elaine Storkey). It looks at what the Church is doing in the context of today's culture and asks whether it is relevant and proposes some challenging ideas on how we go about ministering to today's Christians and the unchurched. - PM2

in print Book cover: The Death of Christian Britain The Death of Christian Britain - Understanding secularisation 1800-2000
Callum G. Brown: Published 2000 by Routledge, an imprint of Taylor & Francis Books, 272 pages, paperback
From one perspective this is an incredibly depressing book charting the decline of the Christian Britain and 'imagining the endgame'. But if you believe that the Holy Spirit can breath life into dry bones then maybe this is just what we need - so God gets the glory and not man. Even if you disagree with the conclusion (or even title) it is worth reading, if only for shattering the myths that our country once enjoyed a perfect Christian past. If nothing else the book is impeccably researched with 33 pages of notes and 24 pages of source material references. Sometimes the scholarly nature of the book does win against clarity, but don't let that put you off there is soon an interesting fact to keep you going. - AC

Jim Cymbala, Dean Merrill: Published 1997 by Zondervan Publishing Company, 196 pages, hardback
Another good read. Twenty five years ago his church Brooklyn Tabernacle in New York was a struggling congregation of twenty. Then they began to pray and God began to move. Today they are 6000 strong. One may not agree with everything Jim says but this book shows what the Holy Spirit can do when people become serious about prayer and reaching out with the gospel. It's an exciting story but also challenging. - RB
